How to Open a PayPal Account in Nigeria and Verify it in 5min

Great news for Nigerians! PayPal is now officially available in Nigeria. This announcement was made on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

However, Nigerian PayPal users can only send funds and make online payments. PayPal does not allow Nigerians to receive or withdraw funds. We hope they will make it available in the nearest future.

What is PayPal?

PayPal is an American company that facilitates payments between two parties through a secure online transfer.

PayPal allows customers to establish an account on their platform, which is connected to the user's credit card or debit card details and whenever you pay using PayPal, you can choose which of your cards or accounts it pays with.

Types of PayPal account

Before I get into how you will create your account, you need to decide which type of account you want to use

There are two types of PayPal account;

  1. Personal Account
  2. Business Account

Personal Account

It's a simple account for individuals that just want to send money to friends or do some online shopping, a personal PayPal account is all you need.

This is the easiest type of account to set up, and for the vast majority of people it’s the one you want to pick.

Business Account

This type of PayPal account is specifically for businesses. Choose this option if you want to sell products online and accept debit and credit card payments for a small fee.

A business account also allows up to 200 employees to access the account.

I will only focus on how to open a personal account in this article. But stay connected as I will be publishing a Business account too and the link will be dropped here.

Requirements for Opening a PayPal Account in Nigeria

  1. Firstly, you will need a valid email address (Gmail, Yahoo mail or a company email).
  2. A phone number
  3. Thirdly, you would also need a Visa or MasterCard linked to a Nigerian bank account. This could be a credit or debit card. The card is important for verifying your PayPal account. A little amount of money will be deducted from the card in the process of verification.

NOTE: Interswitch’s Verve card does not work with paypal service anymore, it was stopped on December 2018,
